What I Did When My Wedding Ring No Longer Fit After Weight Loss

Over the past few months, I’ve had a lot of you who follow me on Instagram comment on the new rings I was wearing:

“I love the new rings you’ve been wearing… but where’s your original wedding ring?”

Well, here’s what I didn’t tell you. My wedding ring no longer fit.

When Weight Loss Changes More Than You Expect

It’s a simple cause-and-effect scenario, but also something I didn’t expect to be dealing with until now. After losing 60 pounds, my wedding ring didn’t fit anymore, and I wasn’t exactly sure what to do about it.

Not in a “slightly loose” kind of way, but it was actually falling off my hand. I had come to the point where I realized I couldn’t wear it. I was too worried I would lose it!

My wedding ring was something I had worn for nearly 20 years. It held so much history, meaning, and identity. But now? It was sitting on my dresser, day after day, unworn. I knew I wasn’t going back to the body I had before—so what was I waiting for?

It felt like something needed to shift. It was time to do something about my ring.

Weight loss changes your body in ways you can see. My wardrobe changed, my body changed, my skin changed… and a lot more. But sometimes, it changes things you don’t anticipate—like how your jewelry fits.

My Ring - Before

What do you do when your wedding ring no longer fits? I decided to try a redesign with Notions of Lovely!

Resize vs. Redesign a Wedding Ring: What I Considered

If you’re in this situation, the first question is usually:

Should I resize my wedding ring or redesign it?

At first, I assumed resizing would be the answer. I even explored redesign options with a couple of different jewelers, but nothing felt quite right.

Not because the work wasn’t beautiful, but because the ring itself no longer felt aligned with who I am now.

Over 20 years, so much has changed. My life, my marriage, and me. And I realized I wanted my ring to reflect that. Not just where we started, but where we are now and where we are going.

So I made a shift.

I didn’t just want my wedding ring to fit.
I wanted it to feel meaningful.

This all happened around our 20-year anniversary, which made the decision feel even more intentional. Instead of resizing my ring, I chose to redesign it using my original diamonds.

Not to replace what I had, but to carry it forward into something that feels like me now.

The Wedding Ring Redesign Process (Step-by-Step)

If you’ve ever wondered how to redesign a wedding ring, here’s exactly what my process looked like:

Step 1. Finding the right jewelry designer

I connected with Marie from Notions of Lovely after seeing her share a redesign project on Instagram. From the beginning, it felt personal and thoughtful—not transactional.

Step 2. Virtual design consultation

We started with a FaceTime call where we talked through:

  • My original ring and diamonds

  • My current style

  • What I wanted the new ring to represent

I sent her photos and showed her my ring while on the call.

Step 3. Sharing Inspiration

Marie had me send her over a Pinterest board with:

  • Shapes I was drawn to

  • Modern ring styles I loved

  • A general aesthetic that felt aligned with who I am now

This part of the process was both fun and hard. While I love Pinterest, it forced me to be specific about what I wanted and make sure to only put things on the board I truely loved. I had to be careful to edit the board well and not have a lot of conflicting ideas.

Step 4. Custom Ring Design

About a week later, Marie came back with design ideas. We didn’t need a lot of back and forth, either! I saw what she had designed, and it was one of those moments where you immediately know: this feels right.

I was so excited and ready to commit to the new design.

Step 5. Crafting the New Ring

I sent off my original ring in the mail to Marie and she  got to work on crafting the new ring. Marie created the ring using my original diamonds but completely reimagined into a new setting. When she was done, she mailed it back to me and my husband and I unboxed it together right before Valentine’s Day. It couldn’t have been more perfect.

My Ring - After!

This is my new ring, ready for my next phase of life!

The Final Reveal: Seeing My Redesigned Wedding Ring

After months of working together, the ring finally arrived. Brian and I opened it together.

Inside was a little handwritten note from Marie: “It’s truly been an honor to refresh your wedding set for the next phase of your adventures.”

And then I saw it. All of the diamonds from my original ring transformed into something that felt completely aligned with who I am today. It was modern and fun, yet classic.

We both just kept saying, “wow.” (I even cried a little, which is not something I do unless I’m really touched.) Not because it was over-the-top, but because it felt so right.

Repurposing Diamonds Into a New Ring

One of my favorite parts of this process was being able to repurpose my original diamonds.

There was something really meaningful about keeping that piece of history intact while changing the design around it. It allowed the ring to still hold its story, just in a new form.

I also loved that Marie was so easy to work with and was able to so quickly and fully capture the design I wanted. There was no endless back and forth, no guessing at what I would end up with. Just clear communication and beautiful craftsmanship.

More Than a Ring Resize. A Reflection of Change

Yes, my ring size changed from a 7 to a 5.75, but this wasn’t just a size change, it was a shift in my style and growth. This felt like stepping into a version of myself that feels more aligned than it did 20 years ago.

One thing Marie said during this process really stayed with me: (pull quote)

“My life has changed… but I still choose you as my person.”

That’s what this redesign really represents.

Not starting over, and not replacing the meaning of our original commitment. But just a way that we are intentionally carrying it forward into something that also fits me and my style now.

If Your Wedding Ring No Longer Fits

If your wedding ring doesn’t fit anymore, whether from weight loss, lifestyle changes, or anything else, you have options.

You can resize it, of course. Or you can redesign it into something that reflects who you are now. For me, redesigning my wedding ring felt like the most meaningful way to honor both where I’ve been and where I am now.

Thinking About Redesigning Your Wedding Ring?

If you’re considering a custom wedding ring redesign or repurposing your diamonds into a new setting, working with someone who understands both your design aesthetic and the emotional meaning the jewelry carries for you makes all the difference.

My experience with Marie at Notions of Lovely felt collaborative, thoughtful, and incredibly personal from start to finish. No longer left unworn on my dresser at home, I get excited everyday I slip on my new ring from Marie.
